Finding A Quality Journal

Publishing in quality journals is an imperative component in the progress of science. It is also a significant factor for a researcher’s professional reputation and career.  To protect the credibility of published research, NIH has issued a Statement on Article Publication to guide NIH funded researchers. UAMS faculty are encouraged to take a few moments to research a particular journal before submitting a manuscript.

A  checklist is provided. For PDF of the checklist please email Education & Research Services. Below the checklist are links to tools used for researching important aspects about a specific journal.

Tools for Researching Journals

Ulrich's Periodicals Directory -  Bibliographic and publisher information on more than 300,000 periodicals. Provides data points for specific journal titles such as:  Publisher, Country of Publication, Refereed/Peer-Review Status, Indexing and much more. This is thefirst stop on researching a journal.

Directory of Open Access Journals (Free Journals)  - Database listing open access scientific and scholarly journals. DOAJ journals agree to follow Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.

Eigenfactor  -  Impact factors & related journal information for all sciences and social sciences.

Journal/Author Name Estimator (JANE) - A tool to help you identify journals for manuscript submissions. Drop in your manuscript's title and/or abstract. JANE utilizes PubMed data to generate a list of possible journals and includes Eigenfactor rankings. Titles indexed for MEDLINE (the top quality indicator) and DOAJ are labeled.

Publishing - See our guide for basics on publishing.

Journal Impact Factor - See our page with more information about journal impact factor.

WorldCat (OCLC)   -  Search the collections of Arkansas libraries and other libraries worldwide. Locate books, videos, and more at a library near you that owns the item.  Find out how many libraries hold a particular journal.
