Susan is currently a Professor and Head of Education and Research Services at the Univ. of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Library. She is a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) at the Distinguished Level. Prior to becoming head of the department, Susan created and coordinated the Library’s Research & Clinical Search Services (RCSS) which included managing the RCSS work flow for expert literature searches, instruction, consultations and House Calls. In 2010 Susan graduated from the UAMS Leadership Institute. Prior to the RCSS, Susan spent 11 years as Coordinator of Outreach Services and was responsible for the UAMS Library’s outreach subcontract with the National Library of Medicine (NLM). She began her medical librarian career at the Delta Health Education Center Library in Helena, AR.
The UAMS Library is one of the original 3 libraries participating in the NIH Public Access Policy (PAP) Compliance Pilot Project. Susan has been on the forefront of this project since January 2010 and has conducted numerous presentations regarding the NIH PAP both on campus and at the regional and national levels.
Susan’s professional activities are varied and include numerous paper and poster presentations, some of which have received research awards from MLA, SCAMeL/SCC and UAMS. Her research interests include flexible work environments and work/life balance issues in health sciences libraries as well as librarian participation on IACUCs and librarians’ roles in the systematic review process. Susan is active at the national and regional levels within professional organizations. At the national level she is a member of the Journal of the Medical Library Association Editorial Board [2019-2022] and is serving on the MLA Credentialing Committee [2019-2021]. Regionally she has held many leadership roles including serving as past President of the South Central Chapter of MLA (SCC/MLA) [2012-2013]. Most recently she has chaired various committees including the SCC Membership Comm. [2017-2019]. During 2014-2015 Susan chaired the Local Arrangements Comm. for SCC/MLA whereby Arkansas medical librarians welcomed colleagues to Little Rock for their annual regional conference. In 2015 Susan was honored with SCC’s Distinguished Service Award.
