MedlinePlus Genetics

MedlinePlus includes a Genetics section with the basics of genetics and ways to search for health conditions, genes, and chromosome problems. It is produced by the National Library of Medicine. 

  • Genetic Conditions - Find information on more than 1,300 health conditions with a genetic basis.
  • Genes - Look up specific genes to find out about what conditions they might relate to, where they are located, how they work, how they are inherited, and more.
  • Chromosomes - Look up information on chromosomes, chromosomal abnormalities, and mitochondrial DNA.
  • Help Me Understand Genetics - Information on genes, cells, and how they all work together. Look up words to find out what they mean. A simple way to explain a complicated subject.

National Human Genome Research Institute

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is a part of the National Institute of Health (NIH). It contains research and information on obtaining research funding for genome research. It also contains:

  • Introduction to Genomics
  • A glossary of genetic terms (in English and in Español)
  • Educational resources and fact sheets 

Genetic Testing Registry

GTR: Genetic Testing Registry

The Genetic Testing Registry contains information on genetic tests, including methodology, purpose, usefulness, and validity. You can search for a specific test or find tests for specific health conditions or drug reactions. 

  • Find genomic tests using the Tests, Conditions/Phenotypes, or Genes tabs.
  • Find a laboratory using the Lab tab.
  • Find in-depth information from experts on genetic topics, using the GeneReviews tab.

To find out definitions such as what a gene is, what a chromosome is, and more, you can check out these glossaries and tutorials.
